The penultimate Saturday in October belongs to the victims of the mountains
On 18 October 2025, a commemoration will take place at the Symbolic Cemetery near Popradské Pleso, during which we will honour the memory of all those who perished in the mountains.
Programme:
- Meeting of participants at 10:00 a.m. at the Mountain Hotel Popradské pleso
- The bell under Ostrva will ring at 11:00 a.m. in honour of the victims
- The commemoration will be followed by a Holy Mass
The Symbolic Cemetery has 407 tablets engraved with a total of 558 names. Sometimes one forgets the plaque which is located directly on the chapel with the four names of the builders and masons of the chapel.
The symbolic cemetery at Popradské pleso is a national cultural monument. For this reason, the placement of the plaques is governed by precise rules and approved by the Curatorium of the Symbolic Cemetery and their installation is in charge of the Centre for the Care of the Tourist Infrastructure of the TANAP Administration.
If you decide to pay silent tribute to the victims by candlelight, do not forget to blow out the flame and take it with you. Please do not leave rubbish at this memorial site!
Let's not forget that this site is not open to visitors all year round either. It is subject to a seasonal closure from December 15, 2025 to April 30, 2026.
The idea to establish such a memorial in the Tatras was suggested by the Czech painter Otakar Štáfl in the 1920s. In 1963, the Symbolic Cemetery was entered into the Central List of the Monuments Fund of the Slovak Republic.
