Kôprovský štít (2,363 m above sea level) is one of the eight High Tatras peaks that are accessible to tourists. It closes the valley of Mengusovská dolina.

Begin

Start at the Patria Hotel at the lake of Štrbské pleso and follow the red Tatranská magistrála. Cross the bridge over the Mlynica Creek.

Then walk up through the forest all the way to the wooded Trigan peak (1,481 m above sea level). Continue through sparse vegetation to Odbočka zimnej cesty (winter trail junction at 1,525 metres above sea level). Stay on the red trail. When covered with snow, this part of the trail is closed all the way to the lake of Popradské pleso. Follow the green trail from the junction in winter.

From the junction, the trail winds through a forest at first, and then it goes on through open terrain of the Patria mountainside to a bridge over the creek of Hincov potok. Continue to the trail junction of Rázcestie nad Popradským plesom. Then walk down the tarmac road to the chalet of Chata pri Popradskom plese. There are 14 stops of an educational trail ready for you along the way to Popradské pleso.

Our suggestion

On your way back, visit Symbolický cintorín (symbolic cemetery; 1,525 m above sea level) under the western walls of Ostrva (peak at 1,926 m above sea level). The cemetery in a pine grove honours all who died in the mountains. Warning – the yellow trail is closed from 1 November till 15 June.

From Popradské pleso

From Popradské Pleso walk up a forest path that later enters the dwarf-pine zone. Continue to the valley of Mengusovská dolina until you arrive at the trail junction of Rázcestie nad Žabím potokom (1,620 m above sea level). In the dwarf-pine zone carry on following the blue waymarked trail, cross Hincov potok again, and climb through the steep but short hairpin bends to the upper part of Mengusovská dolina – the small basin of Hincova kotlinka. Then walk across the hilly terrain all the way to Veľké Hincovo pleso (lake at 1,950 m above sea level).

Climb to the top

From the lake, continue the increasingly steeper climb through hairpin bends to Vyšné Kôprovské sedlo (2,145 m above sea level). From the saddle follow the red waymarked rubble path all the way to the top of Kôprovský štít (2,363 m above sea level). In good weather conditions, multiple splendid views of the High Tatras’ mountains will reward you for your hard work – for example, the view of Kriváň, Mengusovské štíty, Rysy and Vysoká.

Return

To return to Štrbské Pleso, follow the exact same trail that led you to Kôprovský štít.
