The trail runs between the village of Štrbské Pleso and the lake of Popradské pleso. Its 14 stops provide interesting details on the local flora and fauna, as well as the geological history of the High Tatras.
The trail starts in Štrbské Pleso. Find a signpost behind the crossroad with the known cross-country skiing route in the direction of the sports area. Set out on the red waymarked trail. Even though it is open in winter as well, use the winter route in case of snow.
Continue to the ski jumps. Once past the bridge over a tarmac road, turn right and follow the red trail. Walk through the forest, crossing Trigan at 1,481 m above sea level. Then either stick to the red trail, or choose the winter, green waymarked trail.
The red trail boasts fantastic views. Make sure you stay on it if you are a fan of breathtaking scenery.
Both trails join a tarmac road after a while. It leads to the lake of Popradské pleso – the end point of our walk.
On your way back, stroll around the lake and follow the yellow trail to see Symbolický cintorín. Keep in mind that both the yellow trail and the cemetery are closed between 1 November and 15 June.
The symbolic cemetery honours all those who died in the High Tatras and its motto is: “Honouring the Dead – Warning the Living“. Academic painter Otakar Štáfl (1884–1945) came with the idea, and in 1936, started making it happen with the help of his wife and friends.
Having spent several quiet minutes in the cemetery, follow the yellow trail until you reach a blue waymarked tarmac road leading to the lake. Continue walking down the road towards the tram station in the village of Popradské Pleso. Take a tram from there back to Štrbské Pleso.
