From Štrbské Pleso to Tri studničky, Podbanské and back

An easy all day hike through forests.

Trail Length
30,6 km
8:20 h

This is an easy, all-day long hike through forests. The whole trail is clearly waymarked.

Start at the Štrbské pleso lake. On its south-west shore behind Hotel Solisko, find a guidepost with waymarked hiking trails. Choose the red trail – Tatranská magistrála. It is easy and takes you to the trail junction of Rázcestie pod Furkotskou dolinou (1,457 m above sea level).

To the Jamské pleso lake

From the trail junction, keep following the red trail. Then continue through the forest above the Biely Váh River, which is still a small stream here. Pass by the trail junction of Odbočka na Biely Váh at 1,458 metres above sea level and walk all the way to the end point of this hike – Jamské pleso at 1,448 metres above sea level. The lake lies in a pine forest and takes up 0.67 hectares. It is not one of the High Tatras’ deepest lakes – its maximum depth is 4.2 metres. Take a short break on its shore, while enjoying the wonderful view of the basin of Podtatranská kotlina.

From the lake to Tri studničky and Podbanské

Head west, traversing the southern slope of Jamy (1,572 m above sea level) through a sparse forest and clearings. There is an even steeper descend waiting for you at the end of the forest path – down to Tri studničky (1,141 m above sea level).

From this tourist trail junction, follow the red trail all the way to Podbanské (930 m above sea level). This westernmost tourist village is located between the West Tatras (Západné Tatry) and the High Tatras. Its history goes back to the 15th century, the time of Kriváň mining. In 1871, a gamekeeper’s lodge was built here, followed by a sawmill and mill.

Our suggestion

To get back to Štrbské Pleso, either return the same way, or choose an alternative.

Set out on the red trail again and walk to Tri studničky where you have two options to choose from:

  1. Continue on the Tatranská magistrála back to the village of Štrbské Pleso – the same way you got here.
  2. Follow the green waymarked trail. It goes along the road of Cesta Slobody. Closer to its end, the path moves away from Cesta Slobody a little, and runs to the southwest shore of the lake of Štrbské pleso.
